The centuries-old tradition of the Kranjčić family

At the heart of Istria, in the small village of Senj, the Kranjčić family have been living and working for decades. The family have been engaged in agriculture: viticulture, olive growing and animal husbandry – for a very long time. Their love of the land has been passed down from generation to generation, to this very day, when the youngest generations have adopted it. Their connection with truffles dates back to the interwar period, as far back as 1921, when great-grandfather Ivan stumbled upon truffles when ploughing the field next to a large oak tree by the stream. There was no truffles market in those days, so they ended up as “dessert” for the pigs. In the mid-1950s, Ivan (Zvane) trained his dog Bobi and went on his first truffle hunt. His son Nevio has been taking part in the hunt since he was a little boy. Twenty years later he started buying and exporting these “Istrian gems” abroad. Nevio has passed down his love and knowledge of truffles to his two sons. Today, Deni and Mikele help their father with truffle hunting, purchasing, processing and trading, thus providing fresh truffles and the finest truffle products all year round. This way, they are carrying on the long-standing family tradition.
